Most bad experiences with prop firms come down to a rule the trader did not know about until it mattered. The fix is not to find a firm with no rules. It is to know every rule before you pay. These are the ten questions we would ask any firm, including us.
- Every rule should be published and readable before checkout.
- Drawdown type, loss limits, payout conditions and breach outcomes matter more than the headline split.
- Know whether accounts are simulated, and who provides the platform and technology.
- If a firm cannot answer these questions in writing, treat that as the answer.
1. Are all the rules published before I pay?
Not a summary, the actual rules: targets, limits, what counts as a breach and what happens next. If you have to buy to read them, walk away.
2. Is the max drawdown static or trailing?
This decides whether profits give you more room or not. If it trails, ask whether it follows balance or equity, and whether it ever locks. Our static vs trailing drawdown guide explains the difference.
3. How is the daily loss limit measured?
From closing balance, closing equity, or the higher of the two, and at what time does it reset? How the daily loss limit works.
4. Is there a time limit, and an inactivity rule?
They are different things. Many untimed evaluations still close accounts that go quiet for 30 days.
5. Is there a consistency rule, and is it a breach?
A consistency rule should gate payouts, not end the account. Ask for the exact formula. Consistency rules explained.
6. Which rules are hard breaches and which are soft?
You need to know which mistakes cost a trade and which cost the account. Hard vs soft breaches.
7. Do the rules change after I pass?
Some firms tighten rules in the funded account. Ask for the funded rules side by side with the assessment rules.
8. When is the first payout, and what are the conditions?
First payout timing, the regular cycle, buffers, minimums, and exactly what can be used to decline a request. How payouts work.
9. What happens to my gains if I breach?
By default most firms forfeit them. Ask whether there is any protection, and what it costs.
10. Who runs the technology, and are accounts simulated?
Most prop firms run simulated accounts on third-party platforms and infrastructure. That is normal, but you should be told clearly, and you should know which platforms you will trade on.
How TradePath answers them
Every rule for every product is on one page, Trading Objectives, and on each plan before checkout. Our evaluations and funded accounts are simulated, built on FPFX Tech infrastructure, and traded on real third-party platforms including cTrader, DXtrade, PropX and Volumetrica. If a rule does not suit how you trade, we would rather you pick a different product, or a different firm, than find out after you pay.
Common questions
What is the most important thing to check in a prop firm?
Whether every rule is published before you pay, and in particular the drawdown type and what happens to your gains on a breach.
Are prop firm accounts real money?
Most, including TradePath, use simulated accounts. Funded traders are paid a share of the simulated gains under the published payout rules.
Is a higher profit split always better?
Not on its own. Payout conditions, drawdown type and breach outcomes usually matter more to what you actually receive.
Trading involves substantial risk. TradePath evaluations and funded accounts are simulated. This guide is general education, not financial advice. Rules can change; the program rules for the product you buy are what apply.
